I was born in Aurora, on Minnesota’s Iron Range, and grew up in Champlin just outside the Twin Cities. At the University of Minnesota Duluth, I earned degrees in engineering and mathematics and met my wife, Erin. After college we moved to Ashby, her hometown, and we’ve been here over fifteen years now.

I teach mathematics and chair the engineering division at Alexandria College. Over the last few years, I’ve been teaching the calculus sequence to local students and to students around the world through our partnership with the United States Naval Community College. Recently, I’ve also been developing and teaching courses in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Winter is the best season, especially here in Minnesota. Every year I look forward to the first snow and the skiing that follows. This year will be my 10th Birkie. When the ice goes out I run, canoe, and spend as much time at the lake as I can get away with. I built a wood-strip canoe in 2022 and I’m building the second one now. No matter the time of year, my family likes to travel.

I read constantly — fiction, mystery, biography, almost anything. I really enjoyed Trust by Hernán Díaz; the way it explores how truth can be hidden and shaped stayed with me. I recently finished the last book in the Rebecka Martinsson series — I love Nordic noir, and Åsa Larsson is probably my favorite. I also finished Bolaño’s 2666 this past year. I can’t say I enjoyed it, but it was incredibly well-written, and I’m glad I made it to the end.
